Creating a sigil can be a powerful way to cast a spell out into the Universe. Sigils are very personal and should be made yourself. Sigils made by others may not work as well because they are not infused with your personal energy from the get go.
How to Create a Sigil- Basics
Write out your intention or power statement. This shouldn’t be too wordy, but have enough words to be clear and to the point. Tip: when creating intentions, be as specific as possible because the Universe has mysterious ways of making things happen. For example, if your intention is to have more money, you may end up coming into an inheritance upon a close family member’s death. Now, this isn’t saying that this is how it will happen, but something more along the line of “I want to have more confidence to ask for a raise”. For simplicity, I will continue using this example throughout.
Cross out all of the vowels in your statement. If you personally consider “y” a vowel, then cross it out, if not, leave it. This is your choice.
I W A N T T OH A V E M O R E C O N F I D EN C E T O A S K F O R A R A IS E
W N T T H V M R C N F D N C T S K F R R S
Cross out all of the duplicate consonants.
W N T
T H V M R C NF D N C T S K F R R S
W N T H V M R C F D S K
Ok, now that we have our basic letters that we will use to create the sigil, here is where you split paths.
Path 1- Be Creative
Take the letters that you have and arrange them in a way to create an image that you find appealing, or represents to you what your statement says. There is no specific way to arrange the letters. You can turn them sideways, upside down, split them into parts, or all of the above into your design.
Path 2- Stick Figures
Take each of your letters and split it into the corresponding sticks. So a W would be 4 slanted sticks, an H would be 2 vertical stick and 1 horizontal. Use these sticks to create your image. I find this a bit easier because you are no longer bound by the layout of each letter. This can also be harder because you have more raw material to be creative with.
Path 3- Number Grid
This one is a little more in depth, but it’s more analytical than creative. Take your remaining letters and change each letter into a number using the chart below. Then create a 3 x 3 grid of numbers and connect the numbers. You can either go in order of the appearance in your statement or find your own to connect the numbers.
So with our example, the numbers that would correspond would be:
W N T H V M R C F D S K
5 5 2 8 4 4 9 3 6 4 1 2
Taking these numbers, you can draw a grid like this one:
Then you connect the numbers on the grid. You can create this in any way that you wish. You can go in the order they show up, create your own order or you can even remove doubles. The best part is that you don’t have to stick to creating sigils the same way each time.
Sigils are part of a type of magick referred to a chaos magick. Chaos magick is because don the principle that you take what you need at the time and leave the rest. It is very similar to Eclectic, but takes it one step further. You not only take from all types of magick to create your own practice, but you don’t even repeat your own rituals. So there is no “tradition” for a particular way to do things.
