How to Create a Sigil for Witchcraft

For most people, the law of attraction comes to mind first when you think about manifesting. But did you know that you can manifest using witchcraft?

When you use magick, you are changing the energy that you are sending out to align with the intention that you wish to manifest. This is also true when you use the Law of Attraction.

Creating a sigil is a way to tell the Universe what you want and they're really simple to create, especially if you're the artsy type. With that being said, sigils are also very personal and should ideally be created by the user. Sigils aren't something that you want to commission someone to create for you.

The power comes from the energy connection that you create as the sigil takes shape.

Sigils are part of a type of magick referred to a chaos magick. Chaos magick is based on the principle that you take what you need at the time and leave the rest. It is very similar to Eclectic, but takes it one step further. You not only take from all types of magick to create your own practice, but you don’t even repeat your own rituals. So there is no “tradition” for a particular way to do things.

How to Create a Sigil

The initial part of creating a sigil is easy, but shouldn't be overlooked as being simple.

The first step is to write out your intention or power statement. This shouldn’t be too wordy, but have enough words to be clear and to the point.

Tip: When you create a power statement, be as specific as possible because the Universe has mysterious ways of making things happen. For example, if your intention is to have more money, you may end up coming into an inheritance upon a close family member’s death. Not exactly what you had in mind... was it?

Now, I'm not saying that this is how it will happen, but something more along the lines of “I want to have more confidence to ask for a raise” would hopefully prevent some bad potentials.

Ok- now that you have your statement, cross out all of the vowels. If you personally consider “y” a vowel, then cross it out, if not, leave it.It's up to you.

Power Statement: "I want to have more confidence to ask for a raise"

Remove Vowels: I W A N T T O H A V E M O R E C O N F I D E N C E T O A S K F O R A R A I S E

Letters Left: W N T T H V M R C N F D N C T S K F R R S

Lastly, cross out all of the duplicate consonants.

W N T T H V M R C NF D NCT S K FR RS

Final Letters: W N T H V M R C F D S K

Ok, now that we have our starting point, this is where your creative talents come into play- or they don't.

Create a Sigil Method # 1- Be Creative

Take the letters that you have and arrange them in a way to create an image that you find appealing, or represents to you what your statement says. There is no specific way to arrange the letters.

You can turn them sideways, upside down, split them into parts, or all of the above into your design. Try to keep the curves and straight lines intact as you draw. For example, a W would be 4 single l l l l straight lines.

Create a Sigil Method # 2- Stick Figures

Take your final letters from your power statement and split them into the corresponding sticks for each letter. So a 'W' would be 4 slanted sticks, an H would be 2 vertical sticks and 1 horizontal. Use these sticks to create your image.

I find this a bit easier because you are no longer bound by the layout of each letter. This can also be harder because you have more raw material to be creative with.

When creating a sigil with this method, I try to use all of the sticks that I create from the letters. I feel that each 'stick' is still part of the statement and if you leave out 'sticks' then you are changing the letters, and in turn, your power statement.

Create a Sigil Method # 3- Number Grid

This one is a little more in-depth, but it’s more analytical than creative. Take your remaining letters and change each letter into a number using the chart below.

Then create a 3 x 3 grid of numbers and connect the numbers. You can either go in order of the appearance in your statement or find your own way to connect the numbers.

So with our example, the numbers that would correspond would be:

W N T H V M R C F D S K

5 5 2 8 4 4 9 3 6 4 1 2

Taking these numbers, you can draw a grid like this one

1 2 3

4 5 6

7 8 9

Then you connect the numbers on the grid. You can create this in any way that you wish. You can go in the order they show up, create your own order, or remove doubles if you want (but I don't recommend it; see my comment in Method # 2).

The best part is that you don’t have to stick to creating sigils the same way each time.
