Books for Beginner Witches

I remember back in the mid to late 90’s when Silver Ravenwolf was the big name in witchcraft books. Oh, how I longed for her “To Ride a Silver Broomstick” book. Now-a-days, instead of cozy bookstores and libraries, we have Amazon. And Amazon is filled with soooo many books that as a beginner witch, it can be hard to know which books to choose to start with.

After over a decade of starting at the list of Witchcraft Books at my local library and on Amazon, I have put together a master list of books to help any baby witch get started on the right broomstick.

I also have a post with a bunch of FREE Witchcraft and Magick books that you can find here.

Witchcraft Basics

The basics of witchcraft can be found as an overview in most witchcraft books that you pick up. But if you’re just starting out, you might be looking for more than an overview. The witchcraft books below cover the basics and more and are a great introduction to the practice of witchcraft.

Witchcraft Self Study Courses

You might have heard about the “year and a day” of study to become a witch. If not, it’s a thing that some witches abide by and others ignore. It’s meant to give you time before initiating into the practice to study and determine if this practice or lifestyle is for you. These books focus on that year and a day of studying and give you a ton of information on witchcraft and what being a witch means.

Books on Wiccan and Pagan Beliefs

Paganism and Wicca are two common belief systems that get swept up into the casket that is witchcraft. You could say that both Paganism and Wicca are the more religious aspects of witchcraft as they incorporate a deeper connection to Gods and Goddesses in their practice. It is worth knowing about when you are starting out with witchcraft as they are confused with witchcraft very often.

Natural Magick + Herbalism Books

If you’re someone who finds themselves having a strong connection to nature, natural magick may be of interest to you. Some witches focus more on the energy that they can summon to use for their spell work, while others focus on the natural world around them through practices like herbalism, herb craft, and cooking. These types of witches are typically called Green Witches, Kitchen Witches, or Hearth/ Cottage Witches. If a more homey type of magick interests you, check out the books below to get you started. I also recommend supplementing these with some basic witchcraft books as well to better learn how to use herbs in your practice.

You can read more about the different types of witches in a post I wrote about it here.

Books on Casting Spells

As I mentioned above about natural magick, keeping your magick close to home may be of interest to you and you can find some great spells in The House Witch. Or if you are looking for a bigger selection of spells, you can check out the other books below to get you started. Some witches prefer to use their own spells, but when you are getting started, learning the format and seeing how spells are supposed to work can come from spells that other people have written.

Self Care Witchcraft Books

Modern day witchcraft is very intertwined with self care and empowerment. Being able to break free of your limiting beliefs is not only good for your mental and emotional health, but also for your magick as you are no longer limiting your own personal power. But with using that power comes the need to rest and recharge. The books below will give you some ideas on how you can access your power, but also how to recharge it as well.

If there are some books that you think every witch should read, share it in the comments so that other witches can learn from them too!
